I created this portrait of my sister Heather and her two dogs to commemorate the one year anniversary of her passing.

Mother Holding Her Child

I painted this work two weeks before my sister died unexpectedly. This is from the first time I saw my Mother hold my sister since we were children. Before the psychosis, and violent outbreaks. I used cool colors to express the loneliness felt by my sister and allowed the warm colors of my mother to wash over my sister's cradled body. Heather was mentally three, and after experiencing a violent and traumatic event, she developed psychosis because her mind couldn't cope with what happened. This was a powerful moment for me because I felt hope that she might experience happiness and love again. And she did.

Abstract Mountain

I used negative space to give this work a unified motion. The sky was carefully painted using blues and purples to emphasize a calm, chilly space. I used the surface of the paper to imply a bright moon and a cloudy sky ripped open to reveal the milkyway. The mountain was painted with deep, firy reds that bleed together in a molten texture. My intention was to bring together the grandness of earth and space. The warm and cool tones help to unify these elements by suggesting the relationship between fire and water.

I painted this work by laying down careful blocks of color to create texture and heavy lines. I focused on using earth tones such as burnt umber and ochre with a splash of blue to create contrast and definition.
These colors reflect the peace and calm I experienced with myself after physically transitioning. My reference photo was from the first time I could wear dress clothes that fell down my chest naturally. It was a profound moment for me that I chose to capture in this self-portrait.
